DAP's Tanjung MP Ng Wei Aik has been told to lodge a police report if he is “not a coward.”
State Gerakan acting Youth chief Jason Loo claimed that while Ng had been “unusually” trying to promote the police’s probe into the Tanjung Bungah landslide incident, the lawmaker had allegedly “humiliated and disrespected” the force from 2011 to 2014.
He cited an example from 2014, when Ng criticised the police for abusing their power in detaining Penang’s Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS).
At the time, Ng said it was not the force’s place to determine the legitimacy of the uniformed group.
“Ng, look at your record in the past, when you humiliated and disrespected the police,” Loo said in a statement.
Ng had defended the police when state BN chief Teng Chang Yeow said the force was not the competent agency to probe the cause of the landslide which killed 11 on Oct 21.
Ng (photo) said Teng had “insulted and slandered” the police force for questioning their capabilities in probing the case.
The state Gerakan chief had said it was better to form a technical committee of experts on the subject to probe the incident.
Teng’s remarks came after the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) was instructed by state executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow to lodge a report with the police over possible “professional negligence” by the developer, Taman Sri Bunga Sdn Bhd, which led to the landslide on the site, where 980 units of affordable housing were being built.
Loo said Ng is trying to divert the responsibility and accountability of the state and MBPP over the Tanjung Bungah landslide tragedy.
“There is no reason for MBPP to lodge a police report on possible negligence since the state government is planning to form a State Commission of Inquiry into the landslide,” he said.
“Why did MBPP fail to form a technical committee to access the landslide?” Loo asked.
“Ng, if you think Teng had humiliated the police in his remarks, lodge a report against Teng, if you are not a coward." -Mkini
