Gerakan Youth chief Andy Yong has ticked off Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki for unilaterally declaring the country's commitment to becoming an Islamic state.
"BN was formed with the combination of 13 component parties to represent all Malaysians including minorities.
"Asyraf’s (photo) claim was never a part of BN’s founding vision or mission and it never will be," Yong said in a statement today.
Yong said there is no consensus in BN about Malaysia being an Islamic state.
He added that Gerakan respects Islam as the official religion of the federation.
However, he said it is wrong to willfully misinterpret this to promote an "unconstitutional agenda".
Yong added that the large allocation for Islamic institution cannot be equated with the promotion of an Islamic state.
"Asyraf must stop confusing the public but to support the call by the Malay rulers on the need to uphold our social contract on moderation and diversity in line with the federal constitution," he said. - Mkini
