KOTA KINABALU: Police have not received any terror threat to Britain’s Prince Charles’ visit next month but security will be tight for the royal event, Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said.
“Our security arrangements for the royal visit will be tight as per our procedures for such high-profile events,” Fuzi told FMT.
“We haven’t received any threat to the upcoming royal visit, unlike the cancelled beer festival for which we had received a specific terror threat to disrupt the event.”
He was commenting on a challenge issued by an Islamic State fighter from Singapore to Prince Charles’ son, Prince Harry, a former army attack helicopter pilot, to come and fight the terror group in Syria and Iraq.
In a three-minute propaganda video, Megat Shahdan Abdul Samad, nicknamed Abu Uqayl, urged Southeast Asians to wage jihad and took issue with Harry for talking about a terror attack in London during his visit to Singapore in June.
Fuzi added: “But we will constantly review the situation as time goes, and do what is necessary to adapt to any change in the situation.”
Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will be visiting Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Perak and Penang on their first official trip to Malaysia next month. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will start their visit to Kuala Lumpur on Nov 3.
The visit is part of their tour to celebrate Britain’s partnership with Commonwealth nations in the region and will include a trip to India and Singapore, a statement posted on the Prince of Wales’ official website said.
Meanwhile, analysts from the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University said the video, featuring a Singaporean fighter for the first time, attested to the unceasing terrorist threat confronting Southeast Asia.
The emergence of Shahdan and his threats showed that counter-terrorism would be a long struggle and that the threat was moving closer to home, the analysts said. -FMT
