PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) component party MCA today opposed the public statement made by a deputy minister that the government was not shirking its duty to make Malaysia an Islamic state.
In a statement today, MCA publicity spokesperson Ti Lian Ker said the issue had never been discussed by the BN supreme council or in the cabinet.
“This is just another political statement and a gimmick to win over Malay and Muslim votes now that the non-Malay voters are seen to have made up their minds,” he added.
He was responding to Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who said on Saturday that the government’s efforts to uphold Islam could be seen in the constitution, which places Islam as the religion of the federation.
He said the people as well as other nations could see the development of Islam in Malaysia since the country gained independence, and that this was possible thanks to the wisdom of BN, which is led by Umno.
He added that the government was providing the financial resources to empower Islam and that this year alone, RM987 million was provided to the education ministry for Islamic education and RM559 million to the Malaysian Islamic development department (Jakim).
However, Ti said Asyraf had been speaking in his personal capacity in Kelantan, which is ruled by PAS.
“MCA stands firmly in support of the call by the Malay Rulers on the need to uphold our social contract on moderation and to preserve our multiracial harmony in line with the spirit of the Federal Constitution.
“MCA further asserts that all actions including the need to be ‘shariah compliant’ should be ‘constitutional compliant’ first as an assertion that the Federal Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and not any other compliance set by any institution or bodies that may not be constitutional compliant,” he said.
Ti, who is also chairman of MCA’s religious harmony bureau, said the party would ensure that BN continued to uphold the spirit and supremacy of the Federal Constitution, which provides that Islam is the religion of the federation.
“This should not be expanded or misinterpreted to mean an Islamic theocratic state,” he added -FMT
