MBPJ: No need for police nod to approve field for Harapan rally

Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has approved Padang Timur to be used for anti-Kleptocracy rally despite objection from the police.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain said the city council does not need police approval before approving the use of field at Petaling Jaya for the Pakatan Harapan rally.
There is no need for MBPJ to revise its decision on renting out the venue to Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) after the police openly objected it yesterday, according to him.
This is quite different with MBPJ refusing a request to hold the Oktoberfest event at a mall in PJ after objection from the police.
On the Oktoberfest, he said MBPJ follows a different guideline that falls under business permit, which needs police approval.
"The guideline for Oktoberfest is different because it involves a business permit. We allowed Oktoberfest in the past five years because the police had approved it.
"This year, the organiser failed to get approval from the police, that's why I rejected the event at the shopping mall," he said.
On the rally, he said the organiser need to deal with both MBPJ, the landlord of Padang Timur as well the police, as stipulated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
"We give approval for the organiser to use the field, but they need to deal with police if they want to organise the rally," he elaborated.
MBPJ will mobilise its enforcement officers to ease the traffic on the Saturday's event.
"Usually, there is no event (at Padang Timur). When you have an event, for sure there will be traffic congestion. We will assign our officers to manage the traffic, so there it will not be troublesome for the community," he added.
"I gave approval because there is no function and booking from any party," he explained.

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali said the organiser is still negotiating with the police to ensure the anti-kleptocracy rally is carried out smoothly and peacefully.
"From the feedback of the report I received, they will continue to talk to ensure the safety and there will be no congestion or disturbance," he said when met earlier today.
Harapan deputy president Mohamad Sabu had insisted they continue with the rally despite police disapproval.- Mkini
