KUALA LUMPUR – A three-minute video depicting a senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer allegedly involved in an affair with a married woman was released by irresponsible parties who feared the agency’s aggressive campaign in combating graft, said Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
The Special Affairs Department (Jasa) director-general said the video was a tactic employed to threaten and blackmail the officer.
“I condemn those who try to defame the MACC (officer) with this overly sensationalised story. It was made with the intention of blackmailing (the officer and) MACC into not taking firm action in fighting corruption involving certain prominent political figures,” the New Straits Times quoted Puad as saying.
Puad, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, said he hoped the MACC would not bow to such dirty tactics.
“I hope the MACC will not compromise over such tactics. There are certain quarters who are now feeling the heat because of the MACC’s firmness in combating corruption regardless of rank or position.
“Through the dissemination of this defamatory story, they are hoping the MACC will reconsider pursuing certain investigations,” he said, adding that the public should continue providing support to the graft-busters.
Puad said these people were using the “court of perception” by spreading false stories as part of their efforts to obstruct the commission’s investigations.
The Malaysian Insight reported that the woman at the centre of the allegation said she would accept the blame for her divorce from her former husband but would not reveal the reason behind it.
She also apologised to the MACC officer and his family.
She said she had been under pressure to clear her name after the video went viral on social media recently.
Meanwhile, MACC advisory board chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim said the spread of the video on social media was an intrusion into a person’s private life.
“The latest video scandal has to do with the on-going effort by the commission to fight corruption in the country. I think this is really the work, from what I can gather, of the opposition. Definitely, they are scared now,” the NST reportedly said.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said on Friday investigation was underway after a report was made by a marketing executive.
FMT has contacted the MACC officer and is awaiting a response.
