The reactions to the Umno-themed competition at a school in Putrajaya are merely a matter of perception, said the school's Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) chairperson Mohamad Sahar Mat Din.
"I am a rational person. It is indeed relevant (to use 'Umno and independence' as the event's theme), as it is part of our history; just like you cannot erase the fact that Dr Mahathir Mohamed was the former prime minister.
"Maybe (the organiser) wanted the pupils to understand history, maybe the party (Umno) wanted to prove that it had contributed a lot.
"But different people would interpret it differently. Politicians may take advantage of it while some may think there is a political agenda behind the event," he told Malaysiakini.
Such perceptions cannot be controlled, he noted.
Mohamad Sahar stressed that the PIBG was not involved in the organising of the competition.
"How can the PIBG object to such events, when the school does not even seek permission from the parents?" he asked.
Earlier this week, Malaysiakini had reported that the class decoration and performance competition was held at SK Putrajaya Presint 14 (1) with the theme "Umno and independence #Negaraku".
The event was jointly organised by the Federal Territories Ministry, the Putrajaya Education Department, the Putrajaya Umno division education bureau, and two other NGOs.
The pupils were seen chanting slogans, waving Umno's flags and singing Umno anthem during the event, which was attended by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.- Mkini
