Umno has reportedly given its president Najib Abdul Razak the green light to negotiate an electoral pact with PAS, according to a report by The Star.
The report quoted Umno information chief Annuar Musa saying that this is the first time the idea of an alliance between the two parties was floated.
“Everything seems to be positive now and we are still on course with the idea. Since the general election is looming, we are still taking it step by step.
“I am sure it will come to fruition if such a pact is supported by many Malays who are concerned about Malay unity,” Annuar was quoted as saying last night at a dialogue session with three university student leaders, themed "Anda Tanya Kita Jawab" (You Ask, We Reply), in Kuala Lumpur last night.
He supposedly did not elaborate on how the cooperation between Umno and PAS would take place.
Last week, Annuar had also hinted that Umno and PAS would cooperate soon, as both parties had the "same DNA", which is to champion Islam and the Malays.
“PAS may have previously appeared to differentiate itself from Umno, but its present leadership has since displayed a slight shift and started to look at points of similarity.
"Since PAS is from the same DNA, I believe there is a meeting point. No matter where the parties go, they will not run parallel... there will be a meeting point. This is something we can celebrate,” he had said, hinting that there would be an announcement soon from leaders of both parties, which would make "Muslims and Malays very happy".- Mkini
