Siti Kasim slams PPBM youth over Oktoberfest petition

PETALING JAYA: Lawyer-activist Siti Kasim today slammed PPBM’s youth wing for starting a petition against alcohol-based events, amid continuing debate over the celebration of Oktoberfest in Malaysia.
“Everybody wants to be the champion of Islam. It’s all about politics.
“When are the politicians going to start thinking as Malaysians?” she wrote in a Facebook post today.
The petition was launched by Selangor PPBM’s youth wing on Sept 29.
It will be submitted to local councils including the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), as well as the PPBM leadership and the Pakatan Harapan chief secretary.
The youth wing, which has voiced opposition to the celebration of Oktoberfest, said alcohol-based parties were not part of Malaysian culture.
It said many who defended “immoral” events would often cite freedom of expression while labelling those who opposed such events as “extremist, fundamentalist or intolerant”.
It also warned that freedom without limits could pave the way to gay parties and legalisation of same-sex marriages in the future.
However, it denied that it was meddling in others’ way of life by opposing the celebration.
It added that it was not trying to deny the right of non-Muslims to consume alcohol, or demanding an outright ban on it.
Debate on Oktoberfest began with calls from Islamist party PAS for a halt to the Better Beer Festival 2017, originally scheduled for Oct 6 and 7.
The beer fest was eventually cancelled, with Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun citing security concerns. -FMT
