Anifah to remain partyless for now

KOTA KINABALU: Former foreign minister Anifah Aman says he will remain an independent MP for now, despite talk that several ex-Sabah Umno leaders will join PPBM when the peninsular party comes to Sabah.
Anifah is the first MP from Sabah to quit Umno in the wake of Barisan Nasional’s election defeat last year.
The Kimanis MP said he wanted to focus on the fight for Sabah’s rights in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“I am still an independent, I have not given it a thought,” he told FMT when asked if he was considering joining PPBM.
A month after leaving Umno, Anifah hinted at forming a new party but said the decision would depend on the outcome of discussions on MA63 at the federal level.
PPBM, in announcing its decision to launch its Sabah chapter, said between 80,000 and 100,000 people would join the party.
They include the dozens of Sabah Umno elected representatives and division chiefs who left the party last December.
Former Sabah Umno secretary Masidi Manjun said the leaders would hold a meeting soon to decide on their political future.
They will, however, wait for the return of the group’s de facto leader and Sulaman assemblyman, Hajiji Mohd Noor, who is currently in Saudi Arabia. - FMT
