Bridge undergoes repairs after minister, officials fall into sea



KOTA KINABALU: Repairs were carried out 72 hours after a minister and several government officials fell into the water when a dilapidated bridge gave way while they were visiting the water village of Kampung Bahagia in Sandakan.
It is understood the VIP and his officials were visiting the people at the water village when the plank gangway collapsed with a few of them falling into the sea on Saturday (Feb 24) afternoon. No one was hurt in the incident.
The wooden gangway of Kg Bahagia in Sandakan collapsed while a minister and his officials were making visit to the water village.

In a statement on Tuesday (Feb 26), Batu Sapi MP Datuk Liew Vui Keong’s office said that immediate steps were taken to repair the wooden bridge used by the villagers.
Liew, who is Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, ordered the repairs following the incident where part of the 10m section of the gangway collapsed.
Workers building back the wooden gangway at Kampung Bahagia in east coast Sandakan where a minsiter and his officials fell during a visit to the water village.
Incidents of gangways collapsing at waters villagers are common and usually make news when VIPs and politicians become the victims.
During the last elections, there were several reports of politicians on the campaign trail falling into the sea after wooden gangways collapsed as it could not take a large number of people using it at the same time.-Star
