'Dr M resign, Anwar 8th PM' banners appear

Amid the allegations and denials over a plot within Pakatan Harapan to remove Dr Mahathir Mohamad, banners have appeared urging the prime minister to step down.
In Bangsar, a banner tied to a pedestrian bridge read “Mahathir letak jawatan, Anwar Ibrahim PM ke-8. Demi Selamatkan Malaysia(Mahathir resign, Anwar Ibrahim the 8th PM. To save Malaysia).”
Malaysiakini understands that a similar banner was also put up at the MRR2 near the Giant supermarket in Taman Permata, Kuala Lumpur.
Referring to the banner in Bangsar, PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil said he believes it is the work of Harapan's political rivals.
“I have ordered PKR members to remove the banner and to lodge a police report on the incident,” added the Lembah Pantai MP in a Facebook posting this morning.
Mahathir, who sacked Anwar as his deputy in 1998 during the nonagenarian's first tenure as prime minister, has pledged to hand over the reins to the PKR president within two years.
Despite both leaders claiming there is no rift between them, this has failed to extinguish speculation of a potential repeat of what transpired two decades ago.
Last week, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the Islamist party has pledged to support Mahathir if there is an attempt to remove the latter as prime minister through a vote of no confidence.
This followed a meeting between Mahathir, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Shamsuri Mokhtar and Takiyuddin in Kuala Lumpur.
Both Anwar and DAP, who were accused of collaborating with the PKR president to oust Mahathir, have denied the allegation and accused PAS of attempting to distract attention from the claim that its leaders received RM90 million from Umno.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Bersatu supreme council member Rais Hussin also dismissed the coup allegation as nothing more than a “poorly orchestrated rumour”. - Mkini
