KUALA Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan is facing “outside” pressure dissuading him from acting against Ali Cafe Tomyam Seafood Restaurant at Jalan Pantai Baru, Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur.
“I have been getting a lot of pressure from people asking me not take action against Ali Cafe.
“My close friends and relatives are also getting calls from these individuals,’’ the mayor told StarMetro.
He said many people living in the Jalan Pantai Baru area who frequent the restaurant, also urged him to show leniency.
The restaurant, built without DBKL’s authorisation, will soon be demolished. It has been operating on a road divider for several years.

The mayor said too many structures have been built on government land without permission.
StarMetro learnt that the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Land and Mines Office (PTG) had issued the restaurant owner notice to vacate the premises on Jan 7.
The notice expired on Jan 14 and a PTG officer said they could take action anytime under Section 425 of the National Land Code.
Enforcement will be carried out by DBKL.
However, the restaurant owner has sought the help of Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil for an extension.
The length of extension is unknown, but the mayor’s office is adamant on enforcement to avoid setting a precedent.
As of yesterday, it was business as usual at the restaurant with a good lunch crowd, and there was no sign of them packing up to leave.
Revelation of the restaurant’s illegal status came on the heels of several cases involving illegal buildings on government-owned spaces, which was highlighted by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad.
The cases involved buildings put up during the previous administration.
Ali Cafe is located next to the Pantai fire station and is built on a divider on road reserve belonging to PTG.
DBKL and PTG were given orders to demolish the structure several years ago during the restaurant’s renovation, but the team was “instructed” at the eleventh hour to stop the operation by a high-ranking official in the previous administration.- Star
