Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan has disagreed with Election Commission (EC) that the party, together with PAS, had committed an offence by raising racial and religious sentiments during election campaigns.
"We were urging the Malays to unite, is it wrong ?" asked Mohamad.
"(We were urging) the Malays, the youth and the Muslims to unite. If that is wrong, I feel it is better for us to give up our nationality," he said.
Umno and PAS were criticised for harping on racial and religious sentiments during the past by-elections.
"That is a new law that I don't know about.
"This (rule) is against the international convention. It is against the constitution," he said.
On Jan 21, EC chairperson Azhar Azizan cautioned against the use of racial issues while campaigning for the Cameron Highlands by-election, adding that it was an offence.
"Touching upon religious sensitivities during the election campaign is inappropriate and is an offence under the Election Offences Act 1954," EC chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun said in a statement today.
Azhar, however did not mention any candidate or party.
