Legal expertise, not skin colour criteria for AG post - Camerons MP

SEMENYIH POLLS | There is no need to look at the ethnic factor with regard to top government positions such as the attorney-general, said Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Noor.
According to him, expertise and not skin colour should be taken into consideration when appointing a particular individual.
“In my opinion, a person appointed as attorney-general needs to be an expert in law, including Syariah law.
"Ethnicity or skin colour should not matter, it is the expertise in law that is important because the individual advises the government on legal matters, and his powers are stipulated in the Federal Constitution," he told reporters in Semenyih last night.
Ramli, who himself was the highest ranked Orang Asli police officer in the nation's history prior to his retirement, was commenting on BN secretary-general Nazri Abdul Aziz's remark that only a Muslim should be appointed as attorney-general, chief justice and finance minister.

However, the newly-elected MP declined to comment on the accusations that Nazri's statement reeked of racism.
During his speech in Beranang last Saturday, Nazri said non-Muslims appointed to these positions would not be able to take their oath of office by swearing on the Quran.
The BN secretary-general also warned non-Malays against questioning Malay special privileges or risk compromising on vernacular schools.
The remarks courted backlash from various quarters, including MCA. - Mkini
