More students getting involved in violent crimes and it worries cops

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun is concerned over the rise in the number of school students getting involved in serious crimes, such as pushing drugs, sex-related offences, gangsterism and becoming part of militant groups.
Fuzi said according to police statistics, 577 students were nabbed for drug-related offences, compared with 467 held in 2017.
“The situation is getting more serious and it requires everyone’s attention,” he said when attending the national-level “Jom Ke Sekolah” 2019 programme today.
He also said statistics show that 1,285 students were involved in criminal activities.
“There needs to be a more concerted effort to handle the problem since the numbers are worryingly high.
“Negative elements are easily spread through the latest technology. The unfettered use of social media has contributed to the corruption of moral values among the young people today,” Fuzi said.
On a related note, Fuzi said that there will be closer cooperation between the police and schools via the school relations officer (PPS) programme to curb such crimes.
“The role of PPS is to help provide a safe and secure school environment, as outlined in the School Relations Officer’s Guidebook.
“The education ministry is also taking the initiative to provide PPS bulletin boards in schools, aimed at providing information related to PPS’ activities, and current news on laws and crimes of relevance to teenagers,” he said. - FMT
