SEMENYIH POLLS | Parti Sosialis Malaysia candidate for Semenyih Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul has agreed to Bersih's invitation for a debate with the three other contenders for the March 2 by-election.
The electoral watchdog plans to conduct the debate at the Semenyih campus of the University of Nottingham Malaysia on Feb 25.
According to Nik Aziz, Bersih first asked him to participate in the debate via a text message on Feb 13, and followed this up in writing yesterday.
"My reply is that I am fully ready, and I feel that we need a debate.
"The debate is not so we can fight among ourselves, but to talk about how we can best serve the people," he told a press conference in Pekan Semenyih today.
The debate will allow the people to better know the candidates, Nik Aziz added.
PSM central committee member S Arutchelvan, also present at the press conference, urged voters to reject candidates who decline to participate in the debate.
"In the debate for the Cameron Highlands by-election, the BN candidate (Ramli Mohd Nor) did not participate. I think this is not a good culture," said the former Semenyih candidate.
"I hope the BN candidate will show up this time with the others, so the people can choose who is the best candidate.
"The candidate who does not show up should be rejected."
