Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa has declined to weigh in on claims that his party had funded deposits for PAS candidates to contest in the last general election.
"I was not involved, I can't comment," he told Malaysiakini.
Annuar was asked to respond to a claim by Sarawak Report that an aide of then Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak had channelled the funds to PAS.
The whistleblower portal claimed that the aide had banked in RM2.5 million in cash to PAS' Bank Islam account before the general election.
"Sarawak Report has now received confirmation that this money paid to PAS was used to pay for several of PAS’s record numbers of election deposits at GE14, together with another million or so ringgit that was apparently later also deposited in cash by Umno into PAS accounts around the same time in the same way," said the report.
Annuar was at the time the Umno information chief.
In the last general election, PAS contested 155 parliamentary seats, the most number of seats contested by any one party in the country to date.
The deposit to contest a parliamentary seat in an election is RM10,000, while that for a state seat is RM5,000. - Mkini
