PETALING JAYA: Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii says he has been in contact with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on a probe into allegations of corruption involving Sarawak strongman Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“MACC officers and I have been in contact for a few weeks and we will be meeting soon over the allegations of corrupt practices,” he told FMT.
Yii urged the anti-graft agency to review all 15 investigation files on Taib as well as new allegations involving the Sarawak governor.
He said the case against Taib was closed by the Attorney-General’s Chambers in 2013, adding that MACC was then privy to details of the allegations.
He said many groups have since lodged reports on Taib with the police and MACC.
“MACC should also call the NGOs and others who have provided evidence on the allegations,” he said.
Taib served as the Sarawak chief minister from 1981 to 2014. Whistleblower site Sarawak Report and Swiss-based Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) have accused him of amassing wealth through hundreds of companies as well as abusing powers in handing out timber concessions.
Last month, MACC chief Latheefa Koya hinted that Taib was under investigation.
On July 3 last year, then-MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull had said that 15 investigation files on Taib had been opened since 2015.
But Shukri said that no action could be taken unless new information surfaced. - FMT
