Hond Tat Industries Sdn Bhd has denied issuing a directive barring its staff from praying during work hours.
An image of a memo bearing the name of the Klang-based shopping bag and hygiene products manufacturer was recently shared online, causing discontent among netizens.
The New Straits Times quoted an unnamed operations manager as saying that the memo was “fake” and suspected that it was an act of sabotage by a disgruntled staff member.
Hond Tat plans to lodge a police report over the issue.
“This is an act of sabotage. There is no signature on the memo and no approval by the top management. Anyone can take the letterhead and print it.
“We will be lodging a police report on this matter soon.
“No Muslim staff (member) is forbidden from performing prayers during working hours,” the manager was quoted as saying.
The viral image was of a bilingual memo purportedly dated July 30 and issued by Hond Tat’s “top management” with the subject title “prayers during working hours”.
“The management would like to inform all employees are advised that they are not allowed to prayer during working hours except lunchtime only.
“With immediate effect, if found to be in violation of the order, a fine of RM500 shall be imposed for each offence,” the supposed memo read.
It was addressed to its staff and production workers.
The Human Resources Ministry is expected to issue a statement on the issue after verifying the authenticity of the memo. - Mkini
