I didn’t attend chit-chat with PM, says Abang Johari

Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg (second from right) during the 31st Kuching City Day celebration here today.
KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg today said he didn’t attend a recent meeting involving Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Met after the 31st Kuching City Day celebration here today, he didn’t give an explanation for his absence.
“I know about the meeting but I don’t know what transpired at the meeting because I wasn’t there,” he told reporters.
He said a group of GPS leaders was invited by Mahathir to the meeting together with other politicians from other component parties.
He declined to elaborate further.
Earlier, Mahathir had confirmed that he had a meeting with all political leaders and not just opposition politicians.
He said he had met with a group of opposition politicians, including GPS, on Tuesday who had pledged their support for him to complete a full term as the prime minister.
However, Mahathir said he would keep his promise to resign from the top post once the country is “on an even keel” and can “carry on from there”.
“It can be two years, maybe three years. I do not know but we are working on that.
“Unless they push me to a corner and put a gun to my head to continue to finish my term, I will step down,” he said.
It was reported that under a deal struck by the PH leadership, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim would succeed Mahathir as the prime minister.
However, no time-frame had been set for the transfer of power. - FMT
