KUCHING: The headmaster of a tahfiz school has admitted sending out a parental consent form listing “absurd” punishments but denied imposing any of them on its pupils.
State assistant minister Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that from reports he had received, the parental consent form was meant to deter students of Pondok Hidayatul Mubtadi’ien from being absent and misbehaving.
“The tahfiz school has admitted its mistake,” Rahman, who is in charge of Islamic affairs, said.
Rahman said those in charge of tahfiz schools in the state must inform the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (Jais) if they intend to impose new rules.
He said he would meet with all Kuching and Samarahan tahfiz school administrators next week.
Yesterday, a Twitter user uploaded the parental consent form and urged Education Minister Maszlee Malik to investigate. The post has received more than 1,000 shares since.
According to the consent form, parents were asked to allow the tahfiz school to take disciplinary action, including caning and pouring excrement on the students.
It said those who refused to continue their religious studies would not be given school leaving certificates. - FMT
