PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian who installed a camera in a first-class toilet on board an aircraft in the US, yesterday pleaded guilty to video voyeurism, AP reports.
Choon Ping Lee, 50, was sentenced to two months in prison and fined US$6,000 (RM25,270) by a judge in Houston.
The report said Lee could be deported after serving his sentence.
The news report also quoted the US Justice Department as saying that Lee had acknowledged installing the camera in the bathroom.
Lee was alleged to have positioned a camera in the toilet on a United Airlines flight from San Diego to Houston on May 5.
He was arrested on Aug 7 and held in custody in Houston. He is reportedly the first person ever to be arrested under US laws for this offence since it was enacted in 2004.
According to the arrest warrant, a first-class passenger using the toilet on the flight noticed a blue blinking light near a door hinge.
She said the device was loosely hanging and she thought that was odd.
The passenger grabbed the device with a paper towel and gave it to flight attendants when she was done using the toilet. Security staff later confirmed the device was a camera.
Footage on the camera showed a man installing it in the bathroom but did not show his face.
However, the footage revealed the man had on distinct jewellery – a watch on his left wrist and a bracelet on the right. He was wearing a blue short-sleeved shirt and blue jeans, together with black shoes which had black laces and a white trim on the bottom.
Painstaking examination of airport surveillance footage showed a man matching the description boarding the flight and getting off the plane.
The FBI then enhanced the footage and was able to identify Lee.
Earlier reports had stated that Lee was employed by Halliburton, the oil and gas services company - FMT
