Maszlee keeps mum on khat issue being raised at Cabinet meeting

PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik was tight-lipped when asked if the issue on the introduction of khat in primary schools will be raised by DAP ministers in Cabinet on Wednesday (Aug 14).
“I’m a Bersatu (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia) member, not DAP. You should ask a DAP minister, ” he said when approached after the launch of Civic Education by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday (Aug 13).
On Aug 6, Transport Minister and DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said that the party's stand on the issue would be conveyed to the Cabinet soon.
Loke was reported as saying that the party had reached a common stand on the Education Ministry's intention to introduce khat in the school syllabus next year.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said on Monday (Aug 12) that he would again propose a review of the plan to introduce khat in the Bahasa Melayu curriculum for Year Four pupils in vernacular schools.

Lim, who is also Finance Minister, said the matter will be raised again in the Cabinet meeting this Wednesday.
The khat issue has become heavily debated after the Education Ministry announced its plan to implement the art of writing the Jawi script for primary school pupils.
The syllabus is planned to start next year as part of the Year Four Bahasa Melayu subject, although students will not be tested on their skill in writing khat.- Star
