PETALING JAYA: The education ministry has explained its decision to shorten the tenure of Universiti Putra Malaysia chairman Syed Razlan Syed Putra Jamalullail amid his investigation into allegations of misconduct among the university’s top management.
In a statement, the ministry said it made the decision based on “professional considerations” in the interests of the university.
No other explanation was given.
“The ministry appreciates Syed Razlan’s contributions and deeds throughout his tenure as chairman of the UPM board,” it said.
It also announced the appointment of former Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Ghauth Jasmon to replace Syed Razlan.
“This appointment is part of efforts to ensure UPM’s goal of becoming one of the top 100 universities in the world in two years can be accomplished,” it said.
The ministry said Ghauth was the most suitable person for the job based on his reputation in managing a university and his track record at UM.
“This decision was made after taking into consideration various views at UPM, including at the university’s grassroots, and the ministry always prioritises the interests of the institution in such matters,” it said.
Previously, The Malaysian Insight reported that questions were raised over the timing of Syed Razlan’s removal as he was investigating allegations of misconduct.
Syed Razlan, who was serving a three-year tenure as UPM chairman after only being appointed to the job last October, was given a termination letter dated July 17.
The letter, signed by Education Minister Maszlee Malik, did not give any reasons for his dismissal. - FMT
