Dr Mahathir Mohamad said there was "nothing secret" when asked to respond to Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairperson Abang Johari Openg's claim that it was the prime minister who had initiated the meeting with the opposition on Tuesday.
"I've met him (GPS representatives). There was nothing secret," he told journalists briefly after a function in Putrajaya.
Earlier today, Abang Johari said GPS' representative had met Mahathir on the latter's invitation.
"What happened was that there was an invitation by the prime minister (to GPS) and (to) other parties.
"They just wanted to have a chit-chat, that is all. There was nothing to it," he had said.
This morning Mahathir confirmed the meeting with the opposition but was tightlippedwhen asked if PKR deputy president Mohammad Azmin Ali was also present.
"This is a secret meeting, I cannot tell you," he had quipped.
Quoting a source, The Star reported that opposition leaders had met Mahathir on Tuesday night to pledge their support for him to serve out a full term.
According to the report, those present included former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein, PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, as well as GPS chief whip Fadillah Yusof.
The Star also claimed that Mahathir had asked a high-ranking Pakatan Harapan minister to attend the meeting but did not mention the individual's name.
Previously, Azmin had said he “welcomed” Hadi’s support for Mahathir to stay on as prime minister for a full term. - Mkini
