KUALA LUMPUR: A body representing government contract workers said some 45,000 workers still could not get compensation through the Employment Insurance System (EIS), more than two months after they were terminated without notice by cleaning contractors.
M Sivaranjani of the Alliances of Government Contract Workers said the workers were among those affected by the Ministry of Education’s austerity measures, which included reducing the allocation for cleaning works at government schools.
“They were terminated without any notice and compensation,” she told reporters after handing a memorandum to the government’s worker insurance scheme Social Security Organization (Socso).
She said some of the former workers who are still unemployed had their applications for EIS rejected due to failure to provide documents such as payment slips for six months, notice of termination, and proof of employment.
She said Socso had also refused to entertain those who did not apply for EIS using the online form.
“Almost 99% of these workers are not well-educated and do not know how to use computers,” she said.
“Other than that, Socso said they were waiting for the settlement of disputes between workers and employers at JPP,” she said, referring to the Industrial Relations Department.
But Sivaranjani said EIS has nothing to do with JPP.
“What is the motive of EIS if it can’t help those who lost their jobs?”
She said it was unfair for workers from the low-income groups to be denied compensation under EIS.
“They have families, what is left for them if they can’t apply for EIS?”
Meanwhile, EIS chief Mohd Sahar Darusman said there has been a confusion on the contract with MOE.
He said EIS has received over a hundred applications so far, and urged those not familiar with the online method to seek help from its officers.
“I am hoping that we will be able to solve this matter.” - FMT
