Wan Azizah: Govt will discuss khat concerns

PUTRAJAYA: The Government will meet and discuss the uproar surrounding the Education Ministry's decision to introduce khat (Jawi calligraphy) in the school curriculum next year.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said although a decision has been made on the matter, the government is aware of the concerns being raised by the public.
"Khat is a form of art. It has nothing to do with religion. However,we will have a deep discussion on the matter with the Prime Minister, even though he has already made a statement on it before.
"We are aware and we take note of the concerns of the public, especially among the Chinese community," said Dr Wan Azizah at a press conference here.

The decision to introduce khat in the Year Four Bahasa Melayu syllabus next year has received plenty of reactions from the public.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said the move will go ahead next year, adding that the objections were only from a small segment of society.
Earlier,Dr Wan Azizah launched a video-making competition for a sexual harassment awareness campaign.
The campaign, dubbed "Stop It!",calls Malaysians to produce creative videos that can raise awareness about sexual harassment in the country.
On offer is a grand prize of RM5,000,trophy and a certificate.
The closing date for the competition is Oct 5.- Star
