PUTRAJAYA: PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad today took potshots at a senior member of his party for using the title “chief strategist”, saying the party has no such position.
“I don’t know who elected anyone to become a chief strategist for the party,” the prime minister said after a meeting with top PPBM leaders at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here.
“That’s not an official appointment by our party. That’s a title given by that person on his own. There is no such thing.”
This comes a day after PPBM Supreme Council member Rais Hussin, often referred to as the party’s chief strategist, warned Pakatan Harapan that it could be defeated at the next general election.
Mahathir said such a statement could tarnish the party’s image, and could be subjected to disciplinary action.
“We will refer this to the disciplinary board and the disciplinary board will prepare a report to the (PPBM) Supreme Council for it to take action,” he said, adding that Supreme Council members should be careful when making statements.
He however did not name Rais, but when asked who he was referring to, replied: “There is a possibility.”
In an immediate response, Rais, taking to Twitter, said: “I will continue to speak the truth without fear or favour.”
Rais had said that PH needs to take its manifesto seriously to gain the trust of the rakyat and fulfil election promises like lowering the cost of living, improving quality of living and healthcare, creating job opportunities and building affordable homes.
He also disagreed with the approval of e-hailing motorcycle taxi service Gojek to Malaysia, the third national car and the flying car project.
Noting that while PH still had another three and half years to deliver on its promises and to carry out projects that would benefit the rakyat, “if we were to have an election tomorrow, Umno and PAS will win hands down”.
Mahathir said party members are allowed to give their views on the party. But he said it was wrong to say the entire party would lose if an election is called.
He also said PPBM would host its annual general meeting next year. Party elections will take place in June.
He reiterated the party’s stance that they will take in Umno members who have left the party for some time.
However, those with “certain issues”, such as court cases, will not be allowed to join, he said. - FMT
