Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh's continued objection to a scaled-down development of Taman Rimba Kiara is depriving longhouse dwellers of new permanent homes, says Federal Territories MIC chairperson S Rajah.
Objections to the development of Taman Rimba Kiara, which was initiated by the previous government, prompted Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad to propose scaling back the project – which he said was a compromise solution for the developer, longhouse dwellers, and nearby residents.
The developer has promised to build new homes for the residents of dilapidated longhouses adjacent to the park.
However, nearby residents are insisting on the cancellation of the project altogether, arguing that Taman Rimba Kiara is an important green lung for the city.
"I see Khalid is sensitive towards the issue and after considering both sides, has decided to scale back from 2,600 units (of apartments and condominiums) to 1,200 units," Rajah said after meeting with the longhouse dwellers.
"However, they (residents), supported by Yeoh, continue to object to the proposal."
Rajah said that Yeoh should not only listen to nearby residents, but should also consider the needs of the longhouse dwellers.
He also urged her to engage with Khalid on the matter.
Yeoh previously said nearby residents are prepared to compromise, and had put forward two alternatives.
Both alternatives would limit the development to the land on which the longhouses sit, and ensures that Taman Rimba Kiara is handed to the government in its entirety and that no development will take place there. - Mkini
