Zuraida says Zakir Naik ‘out of control’

Controversial preacher Zakir Naik was interviewed by police on Friday.
PETALING JAYA: Controversial preacher Zakir Naik is “out of control”, PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin was reported to have said today, when urging that more time be given for party leader Anwar Ibrahim to deal with “hot” current issues, such as Naik.
Zuraida said that Anwar, the PKR president, had only just returned from Mecca and needed time to settle down.
She said Anwar was away when Naik had made remarks about the Malaysian Hindu and Chinese communities in Malaysia that caused an outcry, as well as opposition to a government decision to extend Lynas Corp’s operating licence.
On Friday, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said the party was waiting for Anwar to return before the party makes a stand on Naik. “We will wait for him to come back and chair the meeting. Only then will we make our official stand,” said Saifuddin.
Zuraida’s remarks today were reported by Malaysiakini which said she criticised Naik, saying: “He has broken our trust in him, and made himself exploited by the opposition.”
Naik recently sparked controversy when he questioned the loyalty of Malaysian Hindus to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and was later quoted as saying that the Chinese community in Malaysia were also considered to be “guests” in Malaysia.
Police have since summoned Naik to record his statement after more than 100 police reports were lodged against him. He is expected to be called in again on Monday.

On Thursday, Putrajaya renewed Lynas’ licence to operate in Pahang for another six months, based on several conditions, drawing criticisms from environmentalist and several Pakatan Harapan elected representatives. -FMT
