5-minute ruling meant to improve traffic flow at airports, says MAHB

Malaysia Airports is giving e-hailers five minutes to pick up passengers at the KLIA and klia2.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) today defended its five-minute waiting time ruling for e-hailing drivers at KLIA, saying it was meant to manage the traffic flow at the terminal.
The airport operator also denied claims that it was aimed at generating additional revenue.
KLIA, it said, was a busy airport with an average of 165,000 passengers passing through at the KLIA and klia2 terminals daily.
Both terminals saw an average of 2,200 public transport vehicles daily, including 300 e-hailing drivers.
“Due to this, it is very important that we impose a maximum waiting time to avoid congestion and inconvenience to other airport guests,” MAHB said in a statement.
In announcing new designated pick-up points for e-hailing drivers on Saturday, MAHB said a penalty of RM10 will be imposed if they remain in the pick-up lane for more than five minutes.
An additional penalty of RM10 will be imposed if the driver continues to wait for another five minutes.
The new ruling drew brickbats from e-hailing drivers, who said it was unfair and that the waiting time was too short.
But MAHB said that a study they conducted showed that it takes only four minutes for six persons, including senior citizens and children, to get into their vehicle.
Its data, it added, also showed that 95% of all e-hailing drivers had managed to pick up their passengers in the allotted time and this had reduced congestion.
“Any e-hailing drivers picking up passengers at the terminal can easily avoid paying any extra charges by driving out of the terminal within the allocated time.”
It said drivers should exit the area if the passengers have not arrived at the curbside on time and re-enter later. - FMT
