Cops have strong evidence to probe LTTE, says Muhyiddin

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says police are probing the possibility of terrorism from LTTE in the country.
MELAKA: Police have strong evidence to conduct investigations against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) based on intelligence carried out over a long period of time.
Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said police intelligence showed there is strong evidence of terrorism or the possibility of terrorism from LTTE in the country.
Muhyiddin said LTTE is still considered a terrorist group even though it had been banned for a long time.
He said the decision to investigate the group was made by the police based on intelligence that had been going on for a long time because they did not want to see any local or foreign parties getting involved in terrorism.
“We have to nip it in the bud and take stern action based the laws we are enforcing.
“For me, the Royal Malaysia Police had acted to safeguard the country’s security based on existing provisions.
“I hope all parties understand as we want to ensure the country is peaceful as the elements of terrorism are not dependent on race. If there are Daesh (Islamic State) supporters among the Malays and Muslims, we will also take action,” he said after attending an investiture ceremony in conjunction with the 81st birthday of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Mohd Khalil Yaakob, at Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh today.
Muhyiddin was the sole recipient of the Darjah Utama Negeri Melaka (DUNM), which carries the title Datuk Seri Utama..
Two DAP assemblymen are among seven persons detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) in connection with activities allegedly linked to LTTE.
In Kuantan, Pahang, Pakatan Harapan secretariat chief Saifuddin Abdullah said the PH leadership held an informal discussion on the arrests of the assemblymen yesterday.
However, he said no decision was made during the discussion.
“We will wait for the completion of the investigation report and follow the procedures,” he told reporters after launching a diabetes awareness campaign at Dewan Indera Mahkota 2 today.
Saifuddin, who is also the foreign affairs minister, said Wisma Putra, with the close cooperation of relevant enforcement agencies, always followed developments of the LTTE, “just like other groups of terrorists”.
“We evaluate, and there are many things we look at, such as the definitions of terrorism itself which are given by other countries or international bodies which may differ and do not meet our stand.
“For example, Israel regards Fatah and Hamas as terrorists but we do not,” he said. - FMT
