‘I couldn’t read widow’s expression when looking at charred remains’

Samirah Muzaffar.
SHAH ALAM: A fireman told the High Court here he could not ascertain the exact expression on the face of Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan’s wife after she was allowed to see his charred remains.
Mohamad Afzan Majid, from the Damansara fire rescue station, said he was standing behind Samirah Muzaffar when she knelt down. He could only see her shaking her head left to right.
The former company senior executive and two teenagers are accused of murdering Nazrin on June 14, 2018 at their Mutiara Damansara home. Indonesian national Eka Wahyu Lestari, also suspected to be involved in the murder, is still at large.
When he was shown a picture published by media last year showing a person looking at the remains by Samirah’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Afzan said he did not know if the person was Samirah.
Shafee: I suggest to you that this is not Samirah because she wore a long dress , brown in colour that day and was not wearing a tudung? This person in the picture was wearing dark blue.
Afzan: I am not sure.
Afzan had identified Samirah as a “Malay woman” at first glance when she was standing outside her house on June 14, 2018. He added she waved at the firemen when they arrived.
He also said that during police investigations into Nazrin’s death, he was not called to identify Samirah but he could identify the woman seated in court today.
However, Afzan could not confirm who the teenage boy and two women in Samirah’s kitchen last year were.
To another question by Shafee on when police recorded his statement and that of other firemen for the case, Afzan could not remember the time and the officer who recorded his statement.
Afzan also said he could not give a reason as to why Samirah went to prepare milk after she came down from the room.
Shafee: You do not know if her action in preparing milk was because she was “speechless” after such an incident happened?
Afzan: I’m not sure.
The hearing continues on Oct 3 before High Court judge Ab Karim Ab Rahman. - FMT
