Kangar police chief files report against Suaram executive director

Kangar police chief Wari Kiew has filed a report against Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy for defamation yesterday.
This followed Suaram's media conference earlier yesterday where Sevan alleged that the police had wrongfully detained and tortured a father and son in the district last month.
"I lodged the report so he could be probed under Section 500 of the penal code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
"I leave it to the Perlis state police contingent headquarters or Bukit Aman to investigate this matter," Wari told Malaysiakini.

During the press conference, Sevan said that Pukalanthee Rajoo and his son Linggeswaran were arrested on Sept 21 after a girl, who was suspicious with the presence of the duo in the area, lodged a police report.
Following the arrest, Sevan claimed that the duo was kept in the lockup for four days without bail, and the police only purportedly explained the reason behind the detention on the second day.
The duo was present during the media conference.
They were said to have been to Kampung Tok Kandang, Kangar, to tar roads and later, were linked to an attempt to kidnap the 15-year old girl.
They claimed that their pictures in the lockup were circulated on social media and due to the incident, they had lost job contracts.
Wari had refuted claims that the duo was wrongfully detained.
"We conducted the investigation according to the law.
"We detained the suspects based on a police report, and we brought them to the court to obtain a remand order.
"No such thing as wrongfully detained. If he (Sevan) was not satisfied, come lodge a report rather than holding a media conference," he had said. - Mkini
