MPs to attend Harapan retreat to discuss bills, hot button issues

Pakatan Harapan MPs will be attending a retreat this weekend ahead of the next parliament session, which commences on Oct 7, to discuss and strategise with regard to the bills that will be tabled.
Among them include Budget 2020, the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) bill, the Defence White Paper as well as the bill to abolish the mandatory death penalty.
"It will be a discussion about the various bills that will crop up in parliament.
"Broadly, it is strategising for the next parliament session... I know the IPCMC is on there (the agenda)," Klang MP Charles Santiago told Malaysiakini.

The DAP lawmaker said there would also be "political talks and political strategies" to take stock of Harapan's situation and current issues such as the Umno-PAS joint charter.

However, Charles added that the full agenda is not out yet.
Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii said the retreat would be divided into various sessions with different ministers.
Apart from government business, he said there would be some discussion on party matters.
"(It will be like) one session with the law minister (VK Liew), one session with (Youth and Sports Minister) Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman on the youth agenda and of course the budget.
"I think different political parties will also be going through some of the pressing hot button issues," he added.
Tanjong Malim MP Chang Lih Kang said that there would also be a session for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to talk about his shared prosperity vision.
However, he stressed the main focus would be on bills and the budget.
"One is the Defence White Paper, we are also getting rid of the mandatory death penalty and I don't know what else," he said.
Meanwhile, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, who is the chairperson for the retreat, said there would be a press conference on the issues discussed after the retreat. - Mkini
