RM7.3 mil and counting, Najib lists federal goodies ahead of Tanjung Piai polls

Former prime minister Najib Razak.
PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak says the federal government has so far announced some RM7.3 million worth of projects within less than a week, ahead of the Tanjung Piai by-election next month.
The former prime minister listed three announcements since Oct 15 of projects he said would benefit constituents in Tanjung Piai, which is expected to see a showdown between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional on Nov 16.
“Let’s wait for any announcement of the ECRL being realigned to include Tanjung Piai,” he quipped in a possible reference to an announcement during the Rantau by-election earlier this year that the East Coast Rail Link project could cover Negeri Sembilan as well.
“Maybe the Semenyih Hospital or the Rantau Hospital will also be relocated to Tanjung Piai,” he added.
The announcements Najib listed included the installation of 264 street lamps in the rural areas of Tanjung Piai at a cost of RM127,776, and grants worth RM230,000 for village chiefs as announced by Rural Development Minister Rina Harun.
He also referred to Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s announcement of RM4 million to upgrade sports facilities in Tanjung Piai, as well as some RM3 million for the upgrade of three fishermen jetties in the constituency.
“The list will be updated from time to time,” Najib wrote on his Facebook page.
Last week, Bersih 2.0 took PH to task for announcing federal projects and allocations close to the by-election.
The election watch group, which has promised to closely monitor the upcoming poll for violations of election laws by all sides, also urged PH to bar federal ministers from visiting Tanjung Piai.
“No government resources like public funds, facilities, staff and vehicles should be deployed by ministers and deputy ministers who are campaigning as party leaders, with the exception of assigned vehicles and personnel for their security,” Bersih said. - FMT
