Nothing wrong in Zainal Kling’s social contract speech, says council of professors
If this is the way the Council of Professors look at things, for sure, the standard of our educational system will be at rock-bottom position.
The Council of Professors should live up to their status and always ensure that their members do not distort facts to gain popularity among certain group of people or to aid certain political parties or their leaders to fulfill their political agenda.
It was already clearly told that there is NO SOCIAL CONTRACT and the Reid's Commission Report 1957 which formed the important basis of the Federal Constitution did not write or mention anything about it too.
The phrase "Social Contract" was actually coined by the late politician cum journalist Abdullah Ahmad in 1986.
Public policy analyst Dr Lim Teck Ghee said Abdullah Ahmad's notion of the "social contract" was often repeated by the leaders of the Barisan Nasional especially UMNO leaders and their supporters, and this has created an unquestionable truth in public consciousness when in actual fact the phrase "SOCIAL CONTRACT" is a mere FICTION.
At the forum titled "Social Contract and its Relevancy in Contemporary Malaysia" at University Malaya on 23 March 2019, Mohamad Tawfik Ismail said "As far as the political parties are concerned, I can safely say that not one Member of Parliament has defended the Federal Constitution as they should and as they have sworn to do".
So, how can Zainal Kling use this word "social contract" in his speech at the Malay Dignity Congress on 6 October 2019 when he ought to knows clearly well that there is no such thing.
The non-Malays did not pay much attention to this phrase since they knew that there was no such thing in the Malaysian Federal Constitution but they wanted to see their Malay populace to achieve a good and reasonable living standards in the Malaysian society since the majority of the Malays then were actually below poverty line.
Rather than to appreciate the non-Malays for their sacrifice and contribution, the Malays had assume that this country owes them a living and some think that this nation belongs to them and they could say whatever they feel like saying to the non-Malays. We cannot blame the ordinary Malays since they were 'brainwashed' to believe this so-called fiction statement.
The time may be right to correct this perception and for the current PH government to clearly tell all citizens that there is no mention of any "social contract" in existence in the Federal Constitution and that all citizens are equal as per the Federal Constitution.
The Malaysian public should also be told of the terms of reference agreed upon with the establishment of Malaysian Agreement 1963 (formation of Malaysia) which took effect on 16 September 1963 which included Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore (Singapore was expelled from the Federation of Malaysia on 9 August 1965 and formed a separate nation).
Once these matters are clearly explained, then at least Malaysians on the whole can learn to live in peace and harmony in this multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural society in Malaysia which comprises of Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. - Mohd. Kamal Abdullah
