The latest controversy surrounds a comic book titled "Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for Win Winism" published by a former DAP member and comic artist Hew Kuan Yau.
Surprisingly, our PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had presented this comic book with notes that it is a gift from Tun Dr Mahathir to the Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting at the sidelines of the Belt and Road Summit at Beijing, China in April this year and pictures show that our PM Tun Dr Mahathir was seen 'delighted' to see Chinese President Xi Jinping happily glancing through this comic book.
Surely this comic book should have been properly vetted by the authorities concerned before this comic book was presented to the Chinese President Xi Jinping by PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Suddenly, this comic book has become a national controversial issue. Certain people now claim that this comic book glorifies the DAP and spreads Communist propaganda.
Many Malay leaders are voicing their opposition towards this comic book. Police reports had been lodged and it is reported that the author/artist Hew had also given his statement to the police today.
Hew had stated that his comic book has be distributed free of charge to all schools in Malaysia.
Hew had expressed that his comic book has become a sensitive controversial issue due to the forthcoming parliamentary by-elections at Tanjong Piai which is represented by a Malay majority.
Why all this unwanted fuss over a simple comic book which the authorities concerned had vetted and approvals obtained prior to printing and distribution. - Mohd. Kamal Abdullah
