PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for a convincing win at tomorrow’s general election (GE15) to “save Umno from being deregistered” by its adversaries after the polls.
In a Facebook post, Umno president Zahid said that a “massive win” for BN would save Umno from a second attempt at being deregistered.
Zahid, who is seeking re-election to the Bagan Datuk seat, claimed that Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin wanted Umno deregistered when they were leading Bersatu under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration.
“They did this as they wanted to eliminate Umno and its grassroots so that Bersatu could take over and dominate the Malay vote,” Zahid claimed.
“Mahathir even told me to dissolve Umno and bring all Umno members and MPs into Bersatu en masse. Muhyiddin also has a grudge against Umno.
“Remember, Muhyiddin once said that Umno will be ‘washed away’ at the Muar river during GE15. Umno will remain in danger as long as these characters remain in PN (Perikatan Nasional), Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and Pakatan Harapan.”
Muhyiddin (Bersatu president) and Mahathir (Pejuang president) lead PN and GTA respectively.
During his Yayasan Akalbudi corruption trial in June, Zahid told the court that then prime minister Mahathir told a meeting attended by Umno’s top five leaders in September 2018 that the party should be dissolved.
Zahid then claimed that when he opposed Mahathir’s proposal, he was subjected to “political persecution” through the numerous corruption charges he faced in court. - FMT
