Hundreds evacuated in Selangor, Penang, Kedah due to floods

PETALING JAYA: Hundreds of victims have been evacuated to temporary relief centres in several states in Peninsular Malaysia due to floods.

According to Bernama, eight relief centres have been opened in Selangor, with a total of 890 victims from 212 families evacuated.

Just this morning, another relief centre was opened in Tanjong Karang.

In Penang, 117 victims in Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Selatan were moved to three relief centres after being affected by flash floods yesterday.

One of the evacuation centres was opened at 2.30am today after eight people from two families were forced to evacuate their homes due to the flash floods.

The affected areas in Seberang Perai Tengah include Alma, Bukit Mertajam, Machang Bubok, Desa Damai and Taman Impian.

In Seberang Perai Selatan, Ladang Valdor, Taman Pekaka and Jawi were affected.

Meanwhile, 239 people in the Kulim and Bandar Baharu districts of Kedah were evacuated to six different relief centres.

Kulim was more severely affected, with 231 residents in the district relocated to the centres, while eight people in Bandar Baharu were evacuated.

In Melaka, 29 people were evacuated to two relief centres in Alor Gajah after midnight due to floods.

The floods were caused by heavy rain which lasted four hours in some areas.

Several general election candidates have suspended their campaigning activities to assist flood victims. - FMT
