Anwar sends legal notice to Kedah MB over ‘immoral character’ insinuation

PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim has issued a letter of demand to Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Md Nor over a speech posted on Facebook which allegedly insinuated that the PKR president was of immoral character.

In the letter delivered today, Anwar demanded that Sanusi immediately withdraw the speech which he deemed defamatory.

The letter stated that Sanusi should also apologise in a media of Anwar’s choice. Sanusi would also be required to give a written assurance that he would not repeat the allegations, failing which legal proceedings would commence.

In the letter sent by lawyer SN Nair, Anwar, who is contesting the Tambun parliamentary seat in Perak, said he would file a RM10 million defamation suit for the damage to his reputation.

“A suit will be filed should Sanusi fail to respond to the letter of demand within three days,” the lawyer said.

Nair said among others, Sanusi implied that Anwar had abused his powers as an MP, was deceitful, a traitor, a hypocrite and not a good Muslim.

Nair said the King had granted Anwar full pardon on June 16, 2018 for his three convictions – one for abuse of power and two for sodomy – on the basis that there was a “miscarriage of justice”.

He said the pardon was also on the basis that there was a conspiracy to condemn Anwar and “assassinate” his political character.

Sanusi, who is also the PAS election director, is said to have made a speech during the ongoing election campaign in support of Perikatan Nasional candidate Ahmad Faizal Azumu, the former Tambun MP.

The speech was posted on Azumu’s Facebook page on Sunday, and Anwar said this had caused serious damage to his reputation as the Facebook post had attracted about 81,000 views, 383 comments, 500 reactions and 61 shares as at the time the demand letter was sent.

He said the content of the speech was also reported in Bahasa Malaysia (“Kes liwat Anwar: Dulu kesian sungguh, sekarang PAS kata kena ‘pikiaq”) and in English by news portal Malaysiakini.

Sanusi’s speech was also uploaded as a video in the news portal.

On Nov 9, Anwar sent a letter of demand to Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria over his claim at a ceramah that the PKR president would promote a LGBT agenda, allow same-sex marriage and support the communist agenda.

Anwar had given the former Gunung Semanggol assemblyman seven days to respond and pay him RM5 million for seriously damaging his reputation, together with legal costs.

Two weeks ago, Anwar sent a similar demand letter to former PKR member Faizal Effendi Hasim for allegedly making false, libellous and defamatory allegations against him through his TikTok account @mr_ari11. - FMT
