Azmin lobbied for MB post after GE14 win, claims Nik Nazmi

GOMBAK: A PKR leader claims that the party’s former deputy president Azmin Ali had lobbied for the Selangor menteri besar post after Pakatan Harapan won the 2018 general election.

At a PH ceramah here tonight, PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said Azmin was afraid that he would be given a federal minister’s post in a “junior” ministry after PH won the election.

“He lobbied (then prime minister) Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Mohamad Sabu and Lim Guan Eng for their support for him to be made Selangor menteri besar again,” said Nik Nazmi.

However, he said, Azmin quickly grabbed the opportunity to become economic affairs minister when given the portfolio, which was also set up as its own ministry rather than under the prime minister’s department conventionally.

“So, to him, everything is about positions. The people don’t get anything because he prioritises power.”

Nik Nazmi, the former Setiawangsa MP, said this general election was Gombak voters’ opportunity to boot out Azmin for betraying their mandate in 2018 and to right the wrongs that followed the Sheraton Move in 2020.

Azmin was among the 11 PKR MPs who shifted their allegiance to Bersatu in February 2020 in what has come to be known as the Sheraton Move.

When Muhyiddin Yassin became prime minister, he was made the senior minister for economy and international trade and industry minister, positions he retained when Ismail Sabri Yaakob took over the top post.

Azmin is now defending his Gombak seat for a fourth term under the PN banner.

He is in a five-way fight for the seat against PH’s Amirudin Shari, Barisan Nasional’s Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, Pejuang’s Aziz Jamaludin Tahir, and independent candidate Zulkifli Ahmad. - FMT
