BN’s Helmy to go all out to woo Chinese voters in Muar

MUAR: Barisan Nasional’s Muar candidate Helmy Abd Latif says he intends to go all out to woo the Chinese voters in the run-up to the 15th general election.

This is because 85% of the Chinese voters are projected to come out to cast their ballots on Nov 19.

He said this was a factor BN could not ignore, adding that the coalition must work hard to convince the Chinese voters to back them.

“We know their inclinations. Still, I would like to meet them to tell them that I am a local who will always be around when they need me,” he told FMT.

Helmy was asked to comment on the challenge in courting the 30% non-Malay voters in the constituency.

Helms said even though the constituency’s former MP, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, was a popular figure who won the seat in the last general election, there was no guarantee he would be able to retain the seat.

In 2018, Syed Saddiq, then with Bersatu, secured 22,341 votes, beating his closest rival, Razali Ibrahim (BN), with a majority of nearly 7,000 votes.

Voters in Muar, Helmy said, wanted a representative who would really look out for them and raise their concerns in the Dewan Rakyat.

He also said that in the Johor state polls in March, there was an increase in votes for BN and Perikatan Nasional.

“So I am confident the people of Muar will be able to judge for themselves who will be able to represent them best.”

However, Helmy said he would not underestimate Syed Saddiq and Perikatan Nasional’s Abdullah Husin as they were former elected representatives.
