Cops probe disabled GE15 aspirant’s claim of road closures

PETALING JAYA: Police are probing a claim by a partially blind retiree who failed to register himself as an independent candidate for the Titiwangsa constituency due to difficulties navigating traffic diversions.

Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah said a senior police officer in charge of the nomination centre at SMK Aminuddin Baki had filed a report on the incident today.

“An investigation has been launched into the incident to probe the claims made by the person,” he said in a statement.

Ashari said the matter was being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements that may cause public mischief.

The section carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to two years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Yesterday, FMT reported that 53-year-old Habib Bourgiba Abdul Hamid missed the deadline as he had faced “obstacles” in reaching the nomination centre.

He arrived at the centre at 10.02am, just two minutes after nominations closed.

The officer in charge of the centre, Firdzaus Said, met Habib at the entrance and apologised for being unable to accept his nomination papers.

Firdzaus said he was bound by the protocol set by the Election Commission.

Habib told reporters he would challenge the decision and make the matter go viral on social media. - FMT
