A group of DAP electoral candidates urged PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to stop underestimating the intelligence of Malay-Muslim voters in choosing their leaders.
The group said the seats currently contested by DAP’s Malay candidates are not “easy seats”, stressing that the party made its decision based on who is the best candidate to help Pakatan Harapan win the 15th general election (GE15).
“The PAS president needs to realise that Malaysians no longer choose their representatives based only on the race and religion of the candidate.
“Malay-Muslim voters will choose Malay candidates from DAP, not only because they are Malay-Muslims but rather based on the performance and service of DAP representatives.
“But Hadi continues to underestimate the Malay community’s intelligence in choosing their leaders and representatives,” said the group.
They added that PAS’ short-sightedness caused them to only rely on racial and religious sentiments to win elections, instead of putting forward candidates of good calibre and sound policies to resolve the rakyat’s problems.
“Although DAP has not clashed much with candidates from PAS, the latter continues to feel that DAP is their main political enemy.
“Perhaps the PAS president could see the wave of voters’ support for DAP and Harapan, which may cause them to lose their power and position," said the group.
The candidates said this after Hadi launched another series of tirades against the DAP.
In an event in Temerloh, Pahang, Hadi said that there were “all sorts of parties in Harapan” including communists, anti-God, liberals, pro-LGBT groups and the corrupt.
The barrage of allegations levelled by Hadi prompted incumbent Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng to file a police report, urging an investigation under Sections 499, 504 and 505 of the Penal Code as well as the Sedition Act, for making such comments without any proof.
Section 499, 504 and 505 of the Penal Code deals with defamation, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace and statements conducted to public mischief.
The statement was signed by DAP’s Malay candidates - Zulhazmi Shariff (Jerai), Khairil Khalid (Pulau Manis), Syerleena Abdul Rashid (Bukit Bendera), Tarmizi Mohd Jam (Gerik) and Young Syefura Othman (Bentong).
It was also signed by Syahredzan Johan (Bangi), Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali (Ayer Hitam), Fatin Zulaikha Zaidi (Mersing) and Shazwan Zdainal Abidin (Pontian). - Mkini
