PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) said it will form a coalition with Perikatan Nasional (PN), Barisan Nasional (BN) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to establish the next government.
GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg said they decided to work with the three coalitions to ensure a stable government is formed as soon as possible.
A top Umno leader who declined to be named however told FMT that BN has not decided on the matter yet.
Abang Johari’s statement comes hours after it was reported that PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had met with the Sarawak premier to discuss the formation of a federal government.
None of the coalitions were able to win enough seats to form a government on its own.
As it stands, PH, together with Muda, have the highest number of seats with 82.
This was followed by PN (73), Barisan Nasional (30), GPS (22), GRS (6), Warisan (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (1) and two independents.
FMT has reached out to BN leaders for confirmation.
Earlier, Istana Negara had told party leaders to form coalitions with parties that have the most number of seats to work together to form the government.
In a statement, the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said party leaders and heads of coalitions would also be asked to propose a prime ministerial candidate to Istana Negara by 2pm tomorrow. - FMT
