MANJUNG: The Perak state government intends to establish a volunteer team to provide aid during and after disasters, state executive councillor Salbiah Mohamed said.

She said the formation of the team was a precautionary measure to mobilise aid missions immediately following floods.

“I understand that at our party level there are volunteers but at state level we have suggested establishing specific volunteers for floods,” Salbiah said after a visit to a flood relief centre in Padang Serai, near Beruas.

“We need to make preparations early before floods occur, we already have a team ready to assist, and they can also help clean affected residences, schools and public buildings as well as channel immediate aid to flood victims,” she said.

Salbiah heads the executive council committee on women, family, social welfare and entrepreneur development.

There are 297 evacuees from 86 families housed at four centres in the districts of Larut Matang, Selama, Manjung and Hilir Perak.

Pengkalan Baharu assemblyman Azman Noh said the floods in the area was because the sewers were not big enough to handle heavy rainfall.

“I hope the government will immediately implement the RM30 million Sungai Beruas basin flood mitigation project, scheduled to begin next year.

“If the project can be implemented, then the floods problem at Kampung Kilang, Kampung Paya Ara, Kampung Paya Lima, Kampung Tualang, Kampung Pulau Kabung and Kampung Padang Serai would be solved,” he said. - FMT
