RM285mil project approved before Parliament dissolved, Rafizi told

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli revealed a letter dated Oct 27 relating to the project in South Klang, claiming that it was approved 17 days after Parliament’s dissolution on Oct 10.

PETALING JAYA: The environment and water ministry has disputed a PKR leader’s claim that a project to upgrade a plant at a drainage catchment area worth RM285 million was approved by the ministry after Parliament was dissolved.

Yesterday, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli revealed a letter dated Oct 27 relating to the project in South Klang, claiming that it was approved 17 days after Parliament’s dissolution on Oct 10.

The ministry said following the dissolution of Parliament, it had stopped the issuance of letters of intent, request for proposals, and acceptance letters for projects, as well as negotiations.

It said the project to upgrade the plant was in fact approved in November 2020 and its procurement process started in October 2021.

“The ministry has been careful with its actions as a caretaker government. Thus, the issue that has gone viral does not arise, as no contracts were entered into by the government and the company during this period,” it said in a statement.

It urged the authorities to investigate the claims made by Rafizi.

Earlier, finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz also rubbished Rafizi’s claims, saying it was a letter to approve negotiations involving the environment and water ministry.

He explained that even after getting the general approval to negotiate, the ministry would still need to discuss with the company and send its recommendations with regards to the next steps to the finance ministry.

Tengku Zafrul advised Rafizi, who is Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Pandan, to report any wrongdoings in the government to the authorities instead of making such allegations. - FMT
