Diversity should drive nation forward, not divide us

YOURSAY | ‘The older Malaysia gets… the more divided Malaysians become.’

No M'sian should be made to feel like an enemy': Interfaith group sounds Merdeka alarm over rising hate

FitnessPro: This sin of dividing the nation is not done by civilians. Down at our taman (neighbourhood), all races live in harmony with one another. There is no hatred nor bitterness among us.

We accommodate each other's race and religion respectfully. They allow me to peacefully celebrate and observe mine, while I have no problem with them observing theirs in my neighbourhood.

Yes, at times, the fireworks go beyond midnight, or even 2am. But this is Malaysia. Yes, we will complain about the fireworks every now and then, but over the years, we have been living in harmony and will accommodate.

It is another group that tries to divide us Malaysians by using a narrative that is imaginary yet harmful and effective. That is the group that needs repentance and re-learning.

They need to be more honest, progressive in their thinking, and have more integrity. Ordinary folk? We are doing alright. And we unitedly hate the 3R narrative propagated by some people.

Optimus: Merdeka is a hollow celebration and loses its purpose when the one day of staged unity cannot offset how politicians from Perikatan Nasional and Umno exploit race and religion to divide and drive disunity and distrust across Malaysia's diverse communities.

They should instead be embracing diversity as a strength to drive the nation forward.

In fact, the older Malaysia gets, the more malu (ashamed) and divided Malaysians become.

I used to watch the Merdeka parade on TV when young, but now I would rather not waste time and better save on my electricity bill.

Oh, better beware of the various flag fiascos, as Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh will be watching and waiting to explode.

Apanama is back: Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST), if one politician calls non-Malays pendatang (migrant) and can get off scot-free, you will see more people who “feel like an enemy” in this country.

Likewise, if another politician calls for a clean-up after proclaiming “victory for Islam” and even converting a Hindu to Islam and posting it on his Facebook, you will also see more people who “feel like an enemy” in this country.

The politicians on both sides started all this, and you will see more along the way leading up to the 16th general election.

One simple question for you. Do we have a so-called unity minister who is getting paid for nothing and is just a decoration? Is he sleeping or awake?

Salvage Malaysia: We have come down to this stage because our government didn't dare to do the right thing.

When they face the opposition, including their own friends in the unity government, playing race and religion in elections, they backed off and let it be to be politically right.

If one is a nobody and you stir up race and religious hatred, I think you might be in jail the next day.

By the way, where is the national unity minister? This cabinet is so weak.

Turnedback: No religion is superior to another, and just because you’re the majority, you cannot call others pendatang.

We are Malaysian, but certain politicians and leaders fear that if we call ourselves Malaysian, they will lose their tools to gain influence over their race.

Ayam Kampung: The original spirit of Merdeka is now a pipe dream, long destroyed by racial politics, toxic politicians and a useless education syllabus.

They have twisted the facts and downplayed the important roles the Chinese and Indians played in the formation of this country.

Kids nowadays grow up mixing with and surrounded by their own races, with their parents too busy on their phones to pay any attention.

There is no longer any hope for this country – especially made worse when successive prime ministers become more and more toxic, proving themselves as corrupt and as disloyal as their own opponents.

GreenFalcon2290: Interesting composition of the members of this organisation. Anyone noticed anything?

How many from the majority community, in and outside of politics, have spoken against all this?

Who from the other institutions that hold sway in the nation have spoken against this?

The answers to these questions will provide a snapshot of how things stand.

As to whether it should be this or that, why should there be a riposte when it's working swimmingly well as it is? - FMT
